The route leads to the Watchman rock, one of the most magnificent looking ‘warrior’ rocks around the Chusovaya. It is a historical place and a natural geological memorial, Sverdlovsk film studio made several movies here (The Ugrum River, The Golden Baba). The path runs across the thick fir-and-pine forest. The Uchebnaya hill gives a beautiful view of the Sloboda village and of St.George church.

Forest Giants

The forests around the tourist center are the place where one can see many century-old trees: larches, fir-trees, pines. The excursion tells about the unusualness of the forest and about the attitude of the local people (the voguls and the Russian settlers) to the woodland in old times. On the way the tourists run into several giant ant-hills (over one meter high) which invariably amaze and delight children.

Sloboda, the time-honored Ural town

The excursion tells about Sloboda, one of the oldest settlements in the Urals. The tourists are going to learn how the settlement was started, they will see the life the first settlers lived and the way they built up iron caravans and sent them floating down the Chusovaya. On the way there is a stop at the famous St.George church which remained active throughout all years of Soviet Power. Those willing are allowed to go inside. Destination – Sloboda rocks. It is a fascinating natural memorial. In their imagination the tourists can easily picture ruins of old castles and fortifications, or pre-historic animals. There are several small caves in the rocks and on their slopes one can find vegetations which are rare for the Urals.

The route follows the path along the Chusovaya river-side and ends up at the broad bend down of Sloboda. The wonderful views around the tourist center open out from Kuzinskaya hilltop: Dog’s Ribs rock, Sloboda rock, St George church encircled by the Chusovaya. Further on one can make out the Shyshym river valley and the town of Novoutkinsk.

Skopino Stone

The route follows a beautiful footpath in the forest. On the sides there are century-old larches and fir-trees from fairy tales. Being a less crowded place than others the rocks of Skopino look strikingly primeval. There are several craters on hilltop and at the foot there is an unpenetrable jungle of man’s height grass.

Town of Kamenka

The tour offers the story of the town of Kamenka, one of the oldest settlements in the Urals. There used to be a sawmill here and a wharf where they made barges. On hilltop of the picturesque Kamensky rock there are remains of a wooden stronghold which was built by Sverdlovsk film studio. It was here where Yaropolk Lapshin, film director, made his most well-known films – ‘Demidov’, ‘The Ugrum River’, etc. In summer it is nice to swim in the little pond in the center of the town.

Georgyevsky rocks
Distance forth and back – 6 km.

The route runs along the steep bank of the Chusovaya and leads to the top of Georgyevsky rocks where earlier stood a little chapel. The settlers of Sloboda used this footpath to march up to the chapel on the eve of St.Yegor Day (May 6) and pray for the rafters.
These rocks are also mentioned in old vogul legends. A steep path leads down to a little niche-looking cave.

Levinsky Stone
Distance forth and back – 7 km.

The tour is intended to show the beauty of the nature around the Chusovaya. The footpath alternately crosses thick fir-tree woods and meadows which are flooded in spring and which are covered with rich growth of various grass in summer. At the foot of the rock there is a broad sandbank, a nice place to have a rest at lying in the sun in summer. The tourists then cross the shallows and walk up to the hilltop from where they can enjoy the wonderful views a long way around the Chusovaya.

The Shyshym river
Summer route.
Distance forth and back – 10 km.

The route takes the tourists to the Shyshym, a little river, which has been a matter of interest for geologists since very old times. They prospected for gold, platinum and silver here. The tourists will hear stories of the famous gold prospectors and experts in ores. They will cross the shallows of the Shyshym and will go up to the top of the Shyshym rock. Occasionally one can see rock climbers here, practicing.
